2 0 1 5 - j a n u a r y . f e b r u a r y

january

we started rehearsals for Little Mermaid Jr. with our 52 kids.

our costumer entrusted me with design and construction of the seaweed boa that the sea-witch swishes!
...oh and I also helped out on a BUNCH of the other costumes as well.  hey, I'm already sitting in the lobby for most rehearsals, I may as well keep busy doing something productive!

took a day off from work and attended the final Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Train Ride in the country, from San Jose to San Francisco.  then we joined the other marchers to walk the 4-1/2 miles to the MLK Jr. Memorial, where several people gave speeches.  caught the train back in the late afternoon after a very enjoyable event.  even got to shake hands with a Tuskeegee Airman, as I thanked him for his service!

this year has already started out with some losses to our theatre family. Janet and I played at the memorial service for the inspiration for our band. another was one of our fellow players from high school.  my favorite wig lady lost her battle with her illness.  and another friend died most unexpectedly at the very young age of 57.  attending his Celebration of Life was like seeing a who's who of local theatre talent - he was beloved by many at several theatre companies.

caught a production of Tuesdays with Morrie - the two performers were perfectly cast in their roles.  they had me laughing and crying the entire show.  met two young people seated behind me who are also passionate about the theatre.  it's so nice to meet the next generation of terrific performers.

february

instead of watching the super bowl with two teams I care absolutely nothing for, I was a water holder at a fun run that raised funds for a local park.  then I caught a performance of Curtains starring a bunch of my friends.  I wrapped up the day at a Mermaid rehearsal.

on another evening I ushered for a performance of Maple &Vine; as I was waiting for the doors to open, one of the performers told me he recognized my voice from somewhere!  he never did remember before it was time to leave.  also caught the preview performance of Fix Me Jesus.

on Friday the 13th I went to The San Jose Improv and caught David Alan Grier's early show.  he started calling me grandma and hi-5ing me, and toward the end of his show he brought me up on stage to sing his signature TeddyP song, "You Are My Super Bowl"  - very fun!  of course I waited afterward to get my picture taken with him.

the Symphony Silicon Valley had a performance of several pieces from the two Fantasia movies, where they showed the video of the songs on a screen above the musicians.  it was a tremendous production!  and the encore was my favorite vignette of all, the Camille Saint-Saens "Carnival of the Animals" yoyo flamingo.  ran into another person who recognized me, and I her, but we neither of us could remember from where.  I had to get all these shows in during the first two weeks of February since we open Mermaid on the 20th.  I won't have time to see anything until we close on March 8.

...although ... since Mondays are now freed up, started band practice with our local community band, and I sit next to my sister who bought her own French Horn so we can play first and second horn together!  it will be so awesome!!  our concert will be in mid-May.

highlights of 2014

this is just a quick review of the year.  to see the full details, keep reading after the Highlights, including many many pictures!

january

had rehearsals for our groundbreaking all female production of 1776

february

had tremendous audiences for our production of 1776.  Mama, Janet and Joyce all came to see it at different times.  our football team didn't make it to the super game but they gave it their all.  had  a few of my pre- and post-show meals at a new Cajun restaurant downtown.  also helped with costumes for A Little Princess at our home theatre.

march

auditioned for and got the part of Alice Fogg in Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders!

april

Joyce and I went to the game 7 of our hockey team!  so exciting, but too bad they lost.  performed in Agatha for four weekends.

may

Joyce and I spent Mothers Day together with pizza and beer.  we also attended a SaberCats game at our local arena thanks to tickets I got at work.

june

Mama and I watched the triple crown races, but unfortunately our probable winner was bumped and injured in a crowded field and didn't finish first.  Joyce and I worked the local art & wine festival, promoting our theatre, and then had dinner.

july

Joyce joined me for a work event, watching Great America's fireworks from the roof of our parking building.  we also went to the very last event at Candlestick, a flag football game with many 49ers (past and present) playing against several famous other-team players.  it was incredible.  and so poignant to leave it one last time.  my favorite karaoke jock planned to move to Colorado so we sang and reminisced for his last few weeks in Cali.

august

volunteered to help with costumes for Gypsy.  went to a preseason football game and strolled through the museum.  took light-rail to avoid the ridiculous parking fee.

september

Janet and I participated in a fun run that ended inside the stadium.  the next day I went to a stadium tour, and then watched the game in the Tailgate Bar.  read and sang several times at Temple.  saw friends in productions of Crazy for You, Moonlight and Magnolias, and Great American Trailer Park Musical

october

celebrated Mama's birthday with Joyce and Janet.  then Joyce and I flew to Florida to celebrate her 25th in style.  destinations for the week were:  Downtown Disney and moonshine at the House of Blues.  took a tour bus to the Kennedy Space Center and an airboat ride in the coastal rivers.  spent a full day at Epcot, including a viewing of the movie Captain Eo, and a spectacular birthday photo with Aurora.  spent another day at the Animal Kingdom followed by an evening at the Orlando Hard Rock and walking through the Universal CityWalk.  took the hotel's shuttle over to SeaWorld, and spent a delightful day there.  I rented a car to make the longer trip up to Daytona, where we wanted to watch the airshow and see the Thunderbirds.  I rented beach chairs and umbrella so we'd have a comfortable view of all the activity.  we bought so many souvenirs that I had to buy a discount suitcase to bring everything back!

november

as a co-producer, participated in auditions for our junior show, Little Mermaid Jr.  saw friends in productions of The Importance of Being Earnest, The Immigrant and Oklahoma.  went to two of our team's football games.

december

went to Janet's holiday band concert.  decided I want to participate next season!  planned and executed a successful holiday party at work.  sang and read at Temple twice.  ushered for a performance of MeshugaNutcracker.  dined at our favorite Israeli restaurant twice.  Joyce and I were joined by our friend Woody in seeing Into the Woods on the big screen.

november 2014

we held auditions for Little Mermaid Jr and had 60 kids come out! back to the way it was when I first started producing. caught a performance of The Importance of Being Earnest with several of my friends. Also caught The Immigrant twice because it was so good! And finished out the month catching a performance of Oklahoma. was able to go to two 49ers games, one of which we won.

december

wooh, did we have some crazy weather this month! rain finally started falling - and boy do we need it. But it sure made it hard to get around and do holiday things. caught Janet's band concert where she was playing my French Horn again.  This settled it; I wanted to get back into playing myself. Janet bought her own horn so we can both play in the band next season, starting in February!

at work, again I was a major planner for the team's holiday gathering, and because the elephant game we played last year was so popular, we did it again as an elefante blanco, and held the party at a local Mexican restaurant. again, the rain tried to ruin the event, but luckily the roof at the restaurant didn't start leaking into our banquet room until after our party guests had mostly left.

sang and read Torah at Temple on two occasions. on Christmas Day I ushered for a performance of MeshugaNutcracker at the marvelous restored Heritage Theatre - so beautiful! I went to Jerusalem Grill for dinner, but had to sit at the bar because it was so crowded! then Joyce and I got together in the evening. our friend Woody was in town and we caught Into the Woods (the movie) and then had dinner. on New Years Eve I worked until 5:00 then went to Jerusalem Grill again for dinner. this time it wasn't quite as crowded. was home in time to avoid new year craziness.
